Kenya Gets Top Seat in African Union Peace & Security Council

Due to President Kenyatta's huge efforts, Kenya re-elected to AU Peace & Security Council.

Kenya was on Friday re-elected to the membership of the African Union Security Council during the ongoing 34th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Kenya who had held the seat since 2016, beat of competition from Ethiopia and Sudan to represent the East African region.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet Secretary Dr Monica Juma stated that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s good working relations with other AU member Heads of State and Governments together with the performance of the country during it’s first three years in the council, helped Kenya to retain the position.

Juma further pointed out that the achievement made would help boost the chances of Kenya to be included to the United Nations Security Council, a position the country is competing for against Djibouti.

The CS affirmed that Kenya is set to take the chairmanship of the 15-member AU Security Council in March, which is rotated on a monthly basis.

Uhuru calls for inclusion of Kenya at the UN Security Council

During the 2018 UN General Assembly held in New York, Kenyatta had called for reforms to have two permanent seats allocated to Africa at the Security Council.

The President further pointed out that Africa deserved more non-permanent seats in the council.

“Kenya joins in the demand for two permanent seats for Africa, with all the rights and prerogatives of current members, including the right of veto, and additional non-permanent seats,” stated Kenyatta.

Africa currently has only three non-permanent seats which are held by Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast and South Africa.
