Kuwait’s government has once again called for respect for the sovereignty and political independence of Somalia following a meeting of the Security Council on Somalia in New York.
This call came during a speech delivered by Kuwait’s UN envoy to the United Nations, Nawal AL-Ahmad at the Security Council meeting on Somalia held in New York on Saturday.
Al Ahmad has called on the international community to continue providing political and financial support to the federal government of Somalia, so as to enable it to rebuild and stabilize the country.
He welcomed the adoption of the security council resolution 2498 which extends sanctions against Somalia for a year. He noted that this extension reflects the importance of continuing to support Somalia at this important stage in history.
He also praised efforts made by the government of Somalia to create conditions for conducting general elections by 2020/2021. Al Ahmad has urged all political parties to overcome obstacles that hinder political, economic and security integration.
