A group of Irish citizens has been informed that they can leave Gaza through the Rafah Crossing in Egypt today, Wednesday.
The announcement is expected today, and once notified, they can exit through the crossing into Egypt.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is in contact with Irish citizens in Gaza regarding this situation.
One Irish family, the Alaghas, including Ibrahim Alagha, his wife, and their three children, is on the list to leave Gaza via the Rafah Crossing.
Mr. Alagha expressed gratitude for the support from the people of Ireland and mentioned the family’s anticipation of returning to Dublin.
Meanwhile, Irish Higher Education Minister, Simon Harris, has criticized Israel, stating that it is conducting “a war on children” following the recent assault on Gaza.
He emphasized the need for peace and condemned the loss of civilian lives, particularly children.
Mr. Harris said that the government needs to be mindful of Irish citizens in the region, including those on peacekeeping missions and citizens trapped in Gaza.
In a related development, Ireland President, Michael D. Higgins, has met with the family of Irish-Israeli girl Emily Hand, and other families of hostages held in Gaza , following the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7.
When asked whether Ireland would offer mediation services between the warring parties, Mr. Harris emphasized the need for a ceasefire and the release of Emily Hand before peace negotiations could take place.
