Mogadishu- 24, October, 2018. A man was caught carrying fake money as he boarded a plane at Adan Adde international airport, Mogadishu. The money, in fake Dollars and Euros was confiscated by Somali’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). Six hours after the arrest of the man, NISA’s investigations led them to an entire network of people and machines in Mogadishu town who mass-produce these fake currencies. The fake money was destroyed and those arrested expected to appear in court on charges of dealing in fake currencies.

NISA has been in the process of cracking down such networks. Since the fall of Siyad Barre’s military regime in 1991, the country was left in a state of anarchy, which meant that there wasn’t a currency regulatory body such as a central bank, and warlords took advantage of this to make their own money to fund their activities. There are also businesspeople who import the current currency that is usually made in Asian countries, claiming the old notes are worn out.

The number of citizens arrested making fake money is on the rise, and this shows that law and order is beginning to be established in the country.
