Riots have erupted in Jigjiga the capital of Somali region of Ethiopia Jigjiga, leading to the deaths of civilians as anti-riot police fire at the rioters. Shops have also been looted. The regional state president Mr Mustafa Muhumed Omer has called for calm and the upholding of the rule of law and said those found culpable will face the law.
“No one should die in these riots and anyone found guilty of causing death will be punished regardless of who they are, including the federal and local police,” said the regional president. The new president is struggling with the challenge of security, since the peaceful revolution in Ethiopia that led to the transition of power from one ethnic group to the other.
After the revolution, the dungeons that were used in the abuse of prisoners was demolished, as a symbol of the new regime. However, the local police who ran it have not been disbanded, and they continue to abuse prisoners
