The Nigerian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, says the Ministry will this week commence the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of grains across the 36 states of the federation.
This is part of measures put in place by the government to address the growing economic crisis in the country.
In a post on X, Mr Kyari noted that the Ministry is collaborating with relevant agencies to deliver the grains to the downtrodden Nigerians.
To ensure stabilization, 58,500 metric tons of milled rice from mega rice millers will also be released into the market.
The minister expressed sympathy with those affected by the hardships in the country while adding that the government understands the gravity of the situation, especially with the unfortunate event of food warehouses looting.
Recall that the Federal Government of Nigeria, through its Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, announced plans to give 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities to poor Nigerians to cushion the effects of the economic downturn.
The West African nation is facing its worst economic crisis in decades following the removal of subsidies on petrol, driving up the prices of goods and services.
Food inflation has also surged to nearly 30 percent, the highest in several years.
