Nigeria’s President calls for support after Supreme Court victory

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to give him the needed support to build Africa’s most populous nation. Mr. Tinubu said this while reacting to the judgment by the Supreme Court that upheld his victory after a keenly contested February 25 presidential election…

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has reacted to the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming his electoral victory.

He said the court pronouncement would stop “media trials, lies and shenanigans” against his person.

Mr Tinubu in an interview with state-owned television, said “The judgment of the Supreme Court put an end to the shenanigans, put a stop to innuendos, lies, trials in the media and public space.”
The president urged Nigerians to join hands with him to build the country.

Earlier on Thursday, Nigeria’s apex court upheld Mr Tinubu’s victory and rejected the applications of the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, seeking to nullify the election of President Bola Tinubu.

The Supreme Court stressed that the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has no special status as argued by the oppositions; therefore, the court affirmed the judgment of the Appeal Court, insisting there was nothing wrong with the tribunal’s decision.
On their parts, the main opposition parties criticised the ruling.

The PDP argued that the Supreme Court had disappointed the citizens, while the LP stated that the executive had hijacked Nigeria’s legislature and judiciary.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Mr. Tinubu, the candidate of Nigeria’s ruling party, APC, as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.
Mr Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates having polled a total of 8,794,726 votes, the highest of all the contestants.
