Panel Discussion on Berbera Economic Corridor underway in Jigjiga City

A panel discussion on the Berbera Economic Corridor and People’s Movement took place in Jigjiga city, Somali Region of Ethiopia. The event, organized by Jigjiga University in collaboration with the Jigjiga City Administration and the Ethiopian Cities Forum, has drawn notable officials and experts to discuss the strategic importance of the corridor.

Key participants include Abdulkerim Ahmed Moge, Mayor of Hargeisa City, Somaliland; Abdushukur Mohamod, Mayor of Berbera City; Mohamed Ahmed Warsamena, Mayor of Borema City; and Mohamed Amin Omar, Mayor of Gabilai City.
The meeting also features Somali Chief Administrator Mustefe Muhammad, Jigjiga University Board Chairman Tesfaye Beljige, and officials from the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure.
In his remarks, Somali Chief Administrator,, Mustefe Muhammad emphasized the crucial role of the Berbera Economic Corridor in promoting regional development and enhancing people-to-people connections. He highlighted the importance of port and sea transport services for the region’s residents.
Tesfaye Beljige, who also serves as Chief Government Whip at the House of Representatives, spoke about the transformative potential of development activities along the Berbera Corridor.
He noted that these activities are key to facilitating the transfer of African trade, services, and capital, aligning with the African Union Agenda 2063’s goals to boost trade and investment.
The panel discussion includes presentations from academics from Somaliland and Ethiopia, who will elaborate on the myriad benefits of the Berbera Economic Corridor.
Topics include infrastructure development, road connectivity to Ethiopia, and various social and economic advantages the corridor offers to the region.
Recall that Somaliland signed memorandum of understanding with Ethiopia which had been vehemently challenged by Somalia authority by rallying internal supports to back its sovereignty intergrity.
