

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially launched the fourth session of Somalia’s Federal Parliament in Mogadishu on Saturday, amidst stringent security measures. The President addressed key issues, emphasizing the recent diplomatic developments.
During his opening speech, President Mohamud underscored the achievements of his administration, particularly in the areas of East African Community [EAC] membership, security initiatives, debt relief programs, and the ongoing efforts against the Al-Shabaab insurgency.
Expressing satisfaction, the President announced Somalia’s full membership in the East African Community block, a culmination of years of anticipation awaiting endorsement by regional heads of state. He provided lawmakers with updates on the upcoming second phase of the military operation against Al-Shabaab, involving frontline states Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud commended the Parliament for its instrumental role in the approval of vital laws during the third session, crucial for the state-building initiatives led by his government. He also lauded the National Army’s dedication in the fight against Al-Shabaab, reiterating his commitment to eliminating the group for the sake of national security.
