Today, President Muse Bihi of Somaliland has officially endorsed significant legislative measures, including amendments to the Electoral and Voter Registration Law, as well as the Political Parties and Associations Law.
The legislation, which was recently passed by the Parliament and subsequently approved by the President, advocates for the integration of Somaliland’s presidential and political associations elections, scheduled to occur in November 2024.
In response, the Chairman of the opposition party, Waddani, Hirsi Ali Hajji Hassan, has expressed support for the President’s approval of the electoral law. He has called upon the public to prepare for the upcoming elections and urged the National Electoral Commission to initiate the necessary processes.
The issue of electoral legislation has been a focal point of political debate in Somaliland for the past two years. However, independent traditional elders took the initiative to mediate between political stakeholders, leading to a resolution outlined in a communique supported by all major political parties and associations.
