A section of the Canadian High Commission building in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, went on fire earlier on Monday, sending workers running for their lives.
The cause of the fire is unclear but reports say it started as a result of an explosion at the commission’s power generating plant.
Two people were feared dead when the fire broke out around 11:30 am local time.
Men of the Nigerian Fire Service later put out the fire.
The Canadian High Commission is located in the central business district (CBD) of the federal capital territory (FCT), Abuja.
The building is a distance away from the Nigerian Ministry of Defence, popularly known as Ship House, and the high commissions of Ghana, UK, and the US.
While reacting to the destructive blaze, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sympathised with the Canadian government, diplomatic community, and all persons affected by the incident.
The Nigerian leader said this in a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale.
The President assures the Canadian authorities of the full support of the Nigerian government in the aid of diplomatic and local staff of the High Commission who were particularly affected by the incident.
He prays for the repose of the departed souls and wishes all injured persons a rapid and full recovery.
