The Puntland Elections Security Committee has issued a statement urging heightened security measures across the state in preparation for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections next month.
In their official communication on Monday, the Committee, responsible for overseeing election security, emphasized the importance of addressing all potential security threats. They instructed security agencies managing entry points to thoroughly screen all individuals entering the state, including inspecting any materials they may be carrying.
Also, the Committee mandated that security personnel on duty refrain from carrying weapons. These directives come in response to escalating tensions in the capital, Garowe, in recent weeks, stemming from disputes over the election calendar and the appointment of election committees by outgoing President Abdullahi Deni.
Reports indicate that on Sunday, the Puntland Maritime Police Force, aligned with President Deni, took control of parliamentary buildings. This move follows opposition and Deputy President Ahmed Karash strongly opposing the selection of the Vetting and Dispute Resolution Committee, recently appointed by President Deni.
