Somali Poet Hurre Walanwal Dies In Burao

Renowned Somali poet Osman Ibrahim Warsame, widely recognized as Hurre Walanwal, has passed away in Burao following a period of illness.

Yusuf Shacir, in a media statement, disclosed that the poet had recently returned home from India, where he had been undergoing medical treatment. Born in the mid-1940s and raised in a rural setting, Hurre played a significant role in Somali cultural history.

Notably, his legendary folklore dance story with Canbaro, which unfolded near Buhoodle in 1960, remains etched in the collective memory of the Somali people.

This narrative has resonated in countless Somali households over the years. Hurre, the sole surviving brother of the late Hadraawi, another esteemed Somali poet who passed away a year ago, as confirmed by Yusuf Shacir.
