Mogadishu. 31,October, 2018. Somalia’s foreign minister Mohamed Ise Awad has said his government does not block aid aimed at Somaliland. Speaking at a Senate, the foreign minister said Somalia does not block aid targeted for Somaliland, and even asked that more aid organisations help Somaliland. He said his ministry has never written letters asking foreign countries to stop sending aid to the people of Somaliland, as they are also Somalis. “There are foreign embassies based in Mogadishu, Somalia, who asked my government whether they can open consulates in Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa, and that is okay with us, but people are afraid that this might interfere with the territorial integrity of the two countries”, said Mr Awad.

The European Union (EU), United Kingdom (UK) are countries that openly interact and give aid to Somaliland, without the consent of Somalia. Somaliland has even signed a multimillion dollar port project, and its inauguration was done without flying Somalia’s flag.

Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has in recent times stated that Somalia is blocking aid to his country and launched a global campaign to isolate and plan internal rebellion against Somalia’s interference.

In an interview with BBC Somali service, Somaliland’s president accused Faysal Ali Warabe, the founder and chairman of the For Justice and Development  UCID political party, of working in cohorts with Somalia’s president. Mr. Warabe met Somalia’s president in the EU-sponsored conference on Somalia reconstruction and war recovery in Brussels, and Somaliland’s president expressed concern over this meeting, as Somaliland was not represented. There are others in Somalia’s government that have called the world to cut off the aid given to Somaliland, but so far, no country has obliged.

Though Somaliland welcomes the aid they receive from other countries, an aid groups to consider what they give as help for the country’s development, as they are now beyond humanitarian help.
