Somalia Intelligence Forces Apprehend Suspected Al-Shabab-Linked Arms Smuggler

The Somalia Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) captured a suspected arms smuggler linked to the al-Shabab. The operation comes just five months after intelligence forces intercepted two illicit shipments containing military hardware and explosive materials at the Mogadishu seaport.

In an official statement, the country’s intelligence agency disclosed that a 28-year-old individual identified as Sakaria Kamal Sufi, also known as Saki, was apprehended while attempting to enter an area controlled by al-Shabab; however, the specific location was not disclosed.

According to the statement, Sakaria Kamal was identified as the mastermind behind a network responsible for procuring military equipment from abroad on behalf of al-Shabab. The agency emphasized that the group had ingeniously hidden the military equipment within commercial shipments, which were seized at the Mogadishu seaport in May of this year.

The intelligence agency successfully arrested ten individuals associated with this smuggling network. However, government officials refrained from providing detailed information about the seized shipments, their origins, or the identities of the individuals involved, underscoring the ongoing sensitivity of the operation.
