The Somalia National Army forces confirmed they have killed one of the top al-Shabab’s leaders in Lower Shabelle region though the group has yet to confirm this.
According to Somalia Military forces, At least eight al-Shabab fighters were killed, including two senior officials and several others wounded in a military operation against the group in Lower Shabelle region on Wednesday.
Danab Forces which is a specially trained arm of the Somalia Forces by the US has conducted military operations against al-Shabab fighters in Leego town which is 120 kilometres in the northwest of the capital Mogadishu.
According to the military radio, the force killed Abdiaziz Awowe who coordinated al-Shabab spy wing in Lower Shabelle region and Abu Khattab who was head of the explosive department alongside six other al-Shabab fighters. The military has, however, not revealed the photo of him.
The operation came days after 13 al-Shabab militants were killed in an operation conducted near Leego town. The Somalia security forces backed by allied forces have stepped up their air and ground operations against the militants in the Horn of Africa nation despite the militants’ continued resistance.
