Somalia: Ministers launch construction of new road in Bidoa

Ministers of Interior, Public Works, and Bay governor together launched a new 800 meters long road as they demolished houses that were illegally built on the road map.

The officials say they’ll build a beam bridge over a stream.

The road is to facilitate car traffic and will link Horseed quarters in Bidoa to Hawlwadag.

Ali Wardheer Abdirahman the Bay governor stated the importance of having that road and he expressed his gratitude.

Mohamed Malak Abukar; Minister of Reconciliation and Local Government of Southwestern Autonomy of Somalia; and Mohamed Shiekh Nuhus; Minister of Public Works; affirmed their belief in finishing the project: ‘We have to believe in ourselves, we can build the road’.

Since Siyad Barre’s regime was ousted, Somalia has neither built new roads nor maintained the old existing ones eroded by weather, wind, rains, and other environmental factors. Many roads in Somalia became unusable for being too bumpy and having too many potholes.

These rough roads impact the transportation of goods and services in the country negatively. Fresh picks of fruits and vegetables do not get to the faraway local markets on time and begin to decay in the midway to the market. This situation has left farmers devastated as they lose a lot of money due to the bad conditions of the roads

Regional administrations backed by the Central Government of Somalia have stepped up maintenances of old roads and are trying their best to build roads and small bridges to link towns and villages.
