Somalia National Intelligence and Security Agency demands Public Servants’ Data

The Somalia National Intelligence and Security Agency has sought the permission of the federal government of Somalia to collect data on Public servants. The kind of information to be collected by the security agancy is still unknown.

 Somalia’s intelligence agency NISA has rolled out a staff audit and data collection on all civil servants in what the government said was aimed at streaming personnel accountability in the public sector.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs said in a directive to all government ministries, departments and agencies to collaborate with the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officials as they conduct the exercise.

The Ministry also urged all government ministries to provide necessary support including office space for the detectives to roll out the programme but did not specify the timelines. There have been reports in the past of ghost workers in government protected by powerful officials.

Somalia has a total workforce of less than 10,000 in the public service some of whom are seconded and paid for by donor organisations to lead the implementation of certain projects, capacity support and injection.

The minister’s letter did not state what kind of information the detectives are to collect.
