Hundreds of soldiers who underwent training at the Turkish military base and Defense University have officially commenced their duties. The commissioning ceremony, which took place on Thursday in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia,, witnessed the deployment of 500 trained soldiers, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between Somalia and Turkey.
Addressing the gathering of Somali government officials, military representatives, and Turkish officials, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud expressed gratitude for Turkey’s steadfast support to the Somali armed forces.
He specifically lauded the contribution of the TURKSOM Military Training School in Mogadishu, highlighting its pivotal role in enhancing and shaping the future capabilities of the nation’s military.
“The TURKSOM Military Training School plays an important role in building and improving the future of the country’s armed forces,” President Mohamoud remarked during the ceremony.
The Somali Eagle Unit, a specialized group, underwent extensive training led by Turkish officers and experts. Their training encompassed both TURKSOM facilities in Somalia and Turkey, ensuring a comprehensive and robust preparation for their responsibilities.
President Mohamoud underscored the significance of the Somali armed forces in countering the threat posed by the Al Shabab terrorist organization, emphasizing the soldiers’ commitment to safeguarding their country, people, religion, and government.
“The gift that cannot be bought or changed is your own life. This gift will be offered for your country, your people, your religion, and your government,” President Mohamoud conveyed to the newly commissioned soldiers.
TURKSOM, operating in Somalia since 2017, was established with the primary objective of training Somali army members and providing support to enhance the capabilities of the Somali armed forces.
