Somalia president visits Eritrea for bilateral talks, security training focus

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud embarked on a two-day state visit to Asmara, Eritrea. He plans to meet with President Isaias Afwerki. As detailed in a Somalia’s Presidency statement, their agenda focuses on strengthening ties and fostering cooperation between the two nations.

This visit coincides with an ongoing military training program for Somalian soldiers in Eritrea, highlighting the defense collaboration between Somalia and Eritrea. Some of the trained soldiers were recently returned home after finishing their program.

Before his departure, President Hassan Sheikh took time to acknowledge the victims of a recent attack by Al-Shabaab on the SYL hotel on Thursday that killed at least three government soldiers and wounded 27.

He bid farewell to 18 individuals, including government officials, legislators, military officers, and civilians, all injured in the assault and now en route to Turkey for medical care.
