The Somali government has announced the death of a top al-Shabab militant leader who was killed over the weekend in a joint military action.
The Ministry of information said Abdullahi Nadir was a top leader of the extremist group who was wanted for a long time.
He was reportedly killed in Haramka village in Middle Jubba region on Saturday but the announcement was made late on Sunday in a statement.
The government did not mention the international partners involved in the operation.
Al Shabab fighters have recorded massive setbacks in recent times as Local militia made gains against the group.
Somalia has been grappling with increasing insecurity for years, with al-Shabab being one of the main threats in the Horn of Africa country.
Since at least 2007, al-Shabab has waged a deadly campaign against the Somali government and international forces that have claimed thousands of lives.
