The Parliament of Somalia’s Puntland Regional State has formally declared its unanimous consent to amend specific provisions of the previous constitution pertaining to the recognition and functioning of political parties within Puntland.
In a decisive vote, all 54 members present expressed their support for the proposed changes to the existing constitution, while four members registered their dissenting opinions on the amendments.
Of particular significance is the alteration that has ignited considerable debate, wherein the previous provision mandating the participation of three parties in elections has been amended to accommodate nine political parties. The Parliament has also passed a new law mandating the existing nine political parties to form a unified political coalition.
Moreover, another notable constitutional amendment approved by the Parliament allows for the direct election of the President and Vice President by the public, effectively replacing the previous practice of appointment by the Parliament.
