In response to the growing security threats at the southern entrance of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the Government of the Republic of Somaliland has heightened its vigilance and taken proactive measures to address the escalating situation. Recent attacks on warships and commercial vessels have raised concerns, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat piracy and smuggling activities in the region.
According to a statement, the potential economic and social repercussions of increased illegal activities across the Red Sea are also a cause for worry. The Somaliland government foresees the possibility of rising commodity prices due to the inevitable escalation in shipping insurance costs in the region.
Somaliland, boasting an 850-kilometer coastline guarded by the vigilant Somaliland Coastguard, has swiftly implemented measures to deter potential acts of piracy and smuggling within its territorial waters.
Over the past two weeks, the government has intensified patrols along the Somaliland coast, demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding its shores and ensuring regional maritime security.
“We are steadfast in our commitment to strengthening maritime safety and security within our territorial waters and exclusive economic zones, upholding the principles of international law,” the statement reads.
It further states that the country “stand ready to collaborate with our regional partners to address the shared challenges of maritime piracy and protect the integrity of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.”
