The house of elders of Somaliland has unanimously approved the election law which is important for the upcoming elections. The country’s President Muse Bihi has also welcomed the approval.
The bill is crucial for the upcoming local councils and parliamentary elections. The bill now awaits President Muse Bihi’s assent to become an act.
Following extensive debate, 49 members of the House of Elders voted for the approval of the new bill, two opposed, while one member abstained. Similarly, the House of Representatives approved the law last week.
Somaliland is planning to hold its local and parliamentary elections within 9 months as the national political parties and the electoral commission agreed. The two houses also did not approve the women and minority clans’ quotes in the parliamentary representation.
