In response to anticipated future discussions between Somaliland and Somalia, the House of Elders in Somaliland has opted to omit plans for reviewing prospective talks between the two states from their current session agenda.
The decision stems from the House’s stance that it is premature to reach conclusive decisions on the talks, citing the absence of ongoing discussions and the government’s yet-to-be-officially-confirmed commitment to resuming negotiations.
Prominent figures in Somaliland’s political landscape, including Members of Parliament and Feisal Ali Waraabe, the Chairman of the UCID party, had advised the government to reassess its position on engaging with leaders from Somalia, particularly in light of Somalia’s declaration of cooperation with officials from Lasanood, a region within Somaliland’s territory.
The last official meeting between the leaders of the two states occurred in Djibouti in 2020, attended by other regional heads of states and international partners facilitating the dialogue.
