The Somaliland Mediation Committee, which independently took the responsibility for addressing electoral disputes between President Muse Bihi and opposition parties, has formally declared President Bihi’s endorsement of the proposed election plan to the general public.
The election proposal put forth by the mediation committee suggests the combination of the Presidential and political association elections, a move aimed at potentially resolving the protracted conflicts among key stakeholders.
During a convened meeting with President Bihi, his deputy, the parliamentary speakers, and the Chief of the Supreme Court, the committee unveiled that the president unequivocally articulated his position. The committee also commended some political entities including the two opposition parties for their support and urged other political associations to adopt similar measures in order to bring an end to the existing political discord.
The proposed election plan recommends the simultaneous conduct of both elections in the forthcoming year, deviating from the previous approach of holding them separately within a year. The committee additionally urged legislators to expedite the approval of pending electoral legislation within the remaining time frame.
