Somaliland: Physically Challenged Receives Bachelor’s Degree

Somaliland Universities produce large number of students each year, but this year appears to be different from the past. Among the graduates was Fadhi Mohamed Omar who is deaf and dumb and received his first bachelor’s degree in Information and Technology.

Fadhi Mohame Omar was one of the many students who graduated from the Universities of Somaliland this year, but his story is different from the thousands who graduated with him. This 17-year-old can neither speak nor hear.

This is a serious problem but it did not stop him from studying and competing with others where he recently earned his first bachelor’s degree in Information and Technology at Golis University, Hargeisa.

All the students he studied with could hear and talk. How he managed these challenges together with his study appears to be miraculous. Fadhi Mohamed Omar’s triumph has now brought the plight of people living with disabilities to the limelight and it is hoped that it will encourage the government to give more attention to people living with disabilities.

Fadhi Mohamed Omar explained that he faced many challenges during his studies, but he is now happy after achieving his goals. He also asked the country’s President and business tycoons to find a job for him.

Fadhi’s parents also expressed their happiness that their son reached a point in life they had hitherto thought impossible for him to reach. They said that ‘After finishing secondary school, we decided to register him at university. But there is no university for deaf people in our country and that was our major challenge’.

Fadhi can be a good example for many who have similar problems as him and challenge them to never give up.
