Abdishakur Iddin Re-elected as the Mayor of Berbera

The new local council members of Berbera held their first meeting today and re-elected Abdishakur iddin as the mayor of the city.

The security of the main streets in Berbera had been intensified in the past 24 hours as the city’s new local council members held their first meeting having been approved by the regional court on Monday.

Abdishakur Mohamud Hassan Iddin will now serve as the mayor of Berbera city for the next 5 years. His rival candidate Mohamed Dable was not present at the venue for unknown reasons.

Abdishakur Iddin was a front runner from the ruling party and was widely feared that the new political alliance between the two opposition parties would affect his re-election.This calls into question the possibility that the opposition parties could win the remaining major cities across the country.

On Sunday, the two opposition parties announced a new political alliance against the ruling party over the leadership of the house as well as the municipalities which could be a political threat to the ruling party Kulmiye which has the majority seats of this outgoing Parliament.

The two opposition parties had previously promised they will hold the current government accountable if they secure the majority seats of the house. It is still unclear how the two parties will share the power after their announcement of a political alliance.
