Hargeisa, July 21 (Somaliland.com) The People of Ainabo district in Sool region took to the streets to protest the classification of their district as a third class district in newly passed law.
On Saturday Somaliland house of representatives passed the districts and regions act which classified Ainabo as a third class (Class-C) district.
The residents gathered at the main artery road and burned tires to block traffic.
People from all ages and genders gathered to protest the passed law. Ainabo residents were hoping their district to be upgraded to a second class district as the president’s previous promise.
Meanwhile, a letter from the president to the house of representatives, dated on April this, urging them to not demote Ainabo district was leaked.
Commentators saw it an attempt to distance the government from the house’s unpopular decision with the district which had heavily voted for the president in the 2017 election.
The bill has made seven Class One districts including the six regional administrative capitals of Somaliland’s regions. Gabiley is the only class one non-administrative regional capital.
