Berbera (Somaliland.com) – Somaliland government announced that Berbera International Airport will be only a civilian airport.
President Muse Bihi on Saturday said that the military plans for the airport were changed to a commercial airport, which he said will be among Africa’s biggest.
The president added that the construction contractor of the airport will arrive next week.
The president’s announcement leaves many questions unanswered. The biggest question is the fate of the deal with the United Arab Emirates to build a military base in Berbera airport.
This comes after two years when the United Arab Emirates began the construction of the military base in 2017 at the airport of the Somaliland port city Berbera. The military base agreement came after the popular multi-million, 30-years concession agreement for the Emirati port operator DP World to manage Somaliland’s main Red Sea port, Berbera.
