Hargeisa–last week, the death of a senior police officer, his brother along with others, has resurfaced the debate on reducing road deaths following the installation of annual mandatory auto checks recently announced by the ministry of transport.
The traffic incidents are on the increase mysteriously and no one on the part of traffic authority explains why deaths dramatically increase despite maintaining pothole roads by municipality.
The factors that contributed to the causalities can be many, however, two types of vehicles lead the death reads incredible way: water tanks and Fitz, small taxi cars. They cause half of the road deaths if not more and no one in the police forces accusingly point finger to them. Are they owned by conglomerates or Sultans or a powerful figures? It is a fact they provide an essential service to water-less city above a million residents.
Small taxis likewise run delivering women on emergency but they do with a peril and endanger the passengers by carelessly driving. Here comes why do they do so? many keen observers say the drivers have driving licenses but they question the way they got their licences. Did they bribe the licence-giving department? and therefore they fraudulently received without taking any tests under the strict supervision of the traffic police. In my experience, I don’t see a traffic police officer in uniform or even driving school accompanying a trainee in a car, or simply car with capital letters ” DRIVING SCHOOL CAR” on its dashboard to bring the attention of drivers to drive carefully behind them.
When dangers increase so wildly, researchers and concerned institution examine the underlying causes that play its role. Somaliland maybe register the annual road deaths but no one says why it decline, if any, or increase.
