Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – The defense lawyers of jailed opposition officials in Somaliland quit today over alleged irregularities in the suit against their client.
Three lawyers of Mohamud Ali Suleiman Ramah announced that they will stop representing him in the criminal case at the Maroodijeh Regional Court.
In a press conference today, the lawyers argued that the case against Mr. Ramah has ended with the plaintiff withdrawing his case. That plaintiff was the Speaker of Somaliland’s House of Representatives Bashe Mohamed Farah who dropped his defamation suit on Monday.
The office of the prosecutor-general charged Mr. Ramah with three criminal counts. The first two are related to sedition and propagating false reports against government agencies. The third charge is defaming the speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Bashe Mohamed Farah. The charge sheet came out a day after the speaker announced that he’d dropped his suit against UCID party’s official.
The lawyers of UCID party’s secretary of the interior said the trial should have ended with the speaker’s withdrawal of the lawsuit. They regarded the other charges irregular prosecution without due process.
Mr. Ramah’s family and party have not commented on the mass resignation of his defense lawyers.
