Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – Somaliland Sustainable Development goals Summit 2019 was held today in Hargeisa in an event presided over by five government ministers.
Sustainable development goals offer a unique opportunity for civil society and government institutions to work together on agreed common goals.
The two day Conference which ends tomorrow seeks to address Justice for all citizens in the country, ending Female Genital Formulation, peace among communities, inclusivity, and freedom of expression.
The summit brought together authorities, practitioners, civil society leaders, and activists. They emphasized the need to localize the 2030 UN Agenda and the need to accelerate its execution.
Somaliland minister of foreign affairs Yasin Faratoon said that although Somaliland is yet to become a member of the United Nations, the country will implement Sustainable Development goals.
“SDGs are universal and inclusive goals. And even though Somaliland is yet to become a member of the United Nations, we deemed it necessary to join the other nations in the world in implementing the SDGs.”
The summit explored why SDG16+ is relevant for Somaliland and has set out those civil society priorities for action. Priority areas include increasing women’s political participation, ending female genital mutilation, and improving access to justice.
