Burao, Jun 1 :- Heavy rain floods with debris today has badly damaged a walking bridge in Burao town, eastern Somaliland.
The Elgooni bridge is a recently built foot-only-bridge by the local government and opened in April. It is located just meters away from the Togdher Main Branch of Somaliland Bank and crosses the popular Togdher Valley.
Video clips showed the moment debris and high running water hit the bridge and destroyed the bridge parapet and handrails and parts of the foundation.
Two other bridges are also damaged by the floods which reached more than six meters high.
No casualties are reported yet and the people are advised to stay away from the valleys and waterways.
Mohamed Yusuf Abdirahman (Muraad), the Mayor of Burao district, and police officers visited the damaged bridges and assessed the extent of this catastrophic disaster.
Police blocked the entrance to the three damaged bridges to prevent anyone from walking onto it.
Two foot bridges are recently built.
