Govt’s lack of commitment hinders rehabilitation of Burao Technical Institute – Ex-Minister

The rehabilitation and reopening of Somaliland’s oldest Technical and Vocational Training School in Burao are contingent on government commitment to funding it with a half-million U.S dollars.

That announcement was made by the former minister of national planning, Abdirahim Haji Osman Abd, Dr. Shibbini.

The former minister of national planning has a message to the ministry of education. I give you Buroa’s celebrated technical institute if you are willing to take it.

The minister who visited Germany last year said he met with a German organization that is willing to rehabilitate the school if the government commits to part of the costs. According to him, the German organization will pay three million and a half dollars while Somaliland’s government ought to contribute half a million dollars.

Minister Shibbin said the technical school could open doors for students this summer if the government makes the commitment.

The only condition is for Somaliland’s government and people to contribute 500 thousand US dollars, while the organization will pay the remaining three and a half million dollars. So what’s remaining is our commitment so that the school opens in the summer of 2020.

Dr Shibbiin

The Burao Technical Institue, colloquially named the German School, is the oldest vocational secondary school in Burao. It was established in 1964 with the help of the then West German government. The school produced boasts of impressive alumni ranging from five-star general, MPs, current and former ministers. Unfortunately, the school was closed during the civil war in Somalia with the successive governments failing to reopen it.
