A massive fire has destroyed a number of shops and businesses in the main market of Las’anod region, the eastren part of Somaliland. Witnesses said the fire was caused by cooking gas which exploded in one of the shops in the market.
The regional firefighters arrived at the scene to put out the fire and rescue the people. A number of shops were reported damaged but no human casualties were reported. A senior police officer who spoke to the media noted that the rescue team faced a challenge after locals blocked streets that caused the fire brigade to find difficulties to immediately reach the destination.
Traders were seen storing their properties at the surroundings of the market to escape the fire. They extended gratitude to the fire brigade for helping them rescue their remaining properties.
In April, another giant fire broke out in the main market of the city of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. The blaze which started on Friday night, injured about two dozen people and destroyed hundreds of businesses, according to the authorities.
