International conference on trade and transport facilitation concludes in Hargeisa

The international conference on trade and transport facilitation held in Hargeisa has eventually concluded with extensive discussions on regional trade barriers in particular Somaliland and Ethiopia.

The three days conference aimed at finding effective and long lasting solutions to trade challenges between the two neighbouring countries. Traders from Ethiopia and Somaliland were among the participants and they agreed that it is the right time for the regional countries to cooperate in terms of trade.

Some of the participants asked the Somaliland ministry of commerce and industries about their plans on illegal imports from the Ethiopian border and the growing inflation in Wajale town. Barkhad Abib, a senior officer from the ministry said that the government has clear plans to lower the inflation in Wajaale town.

The audience also asked Hasan Haji Farah, the Executive Director of Berbera free zone about the exact date Berbera free zone will start functioning and he expressed optimism that it will add much value to the regional development.

In closing remarks, a senior officer of AQN law firm, Abdishakour Ali Mohamed extended gratitude to the participants for their contributions to the platform. The event organisers also pledged to work with stakeholders in removing regional trade barriers.

It is widely believed this will help the two countries to enhance their connectivity and trade infrastructure. Participants recounted the significance of such conferences to the region which is expected to lower regional trade barriers.
