Delegates from the international communities have toured around the razed Waheen Market to give solidarities to the people of Somaliland with a vow to help create a temporary relocation and support in rebuilding the market which serves as the main source of livelihood for many.
The international delegates comprised of the United Nation, European Union, ambassadors from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and representative from various international NGOs.
The Mayor of Hargeisa Ahmad Mooge welcomed the joint delegates at the heart of the razed down Market saying he’s short of word in describing the incidence. Mooge , who solicited the support of the international communities said Somaliland needs to get back quickly on its feet from the shock as the market contributes about 60% to the national GDP.
The team of the joint delegation thereafter took a tour of the gutted market as the ruins from the inferno baffled them all.
Dr Jacquiy Olwaya of the UNDP said the team is ready to work with national response committee for Waheen market in giving the necessary support in accordance with estimated needs of the people of Somaliland.
EU delegates pledged that Somaliland is not alone in this trial time adding that the country will be supported adequately.
Lizzy woker who is the head of the British office in Hargeisa empathized with Somaliland especially women who bore the brunt of the fire destruction.
Swedish Ambassador to Somalia Per Lindgarde elaborated on the need to speed up the process of rebuilding the market as majority of women population of Somaliland are affected.
The popular Waheen market otherwise called Hargeisa Suuq was razed by a large fire last Friday and properties worth $2 billion were lost to the incidence.
Until now the government has not yet declared when it would be reopened. Many families earn their living from the market and analyst said its the fourth largest market in whole of east Africa.
