The regional electoral commission of Somaliland has held a meeting today in Mogadishu to elect a new chairman to spearhead the electoral process of Somalia. The deputy prime minister’s wing occupied their seats in the early hours of the day while the faction of the upper house speaker boycotted and did not attend.
Khadar Harir who is from the deputy prime minister’s wing has been elected as the new chairman of the electoral commission while Najib Hussein Samale was elected the deputy chair of the commission.
The regional electoral commission is expected to start the electoral process to represent Somaliland for the upper house of Somalia, though Somaliland government clarified that Somalia’s election has nothing to do with Somaliland.
Somalia will soon hold parliamentary and presidential elections. Government top officials advised federal member states to expedite the electoral process to avoid further delays.
