Two of Somaliland’s three political parties have yesterday agreed on a roadmap for this year’s scheduled parliamentary and local councils election.
A joint press conference held by officials from the ruling party, Kulmiye, and Justice & Welfare party-UCID, one of the two oppositions parties, released a six-point resolution agreement.
This resolution from the two parties stated that this will end a year-long election impasse.
The signed roadmap details the proposed solutions to the election challenges and will pave the way for the elections to happen at the scheduled date, on December 13th, this year.
The third party, Waddani, the main opposition party was part of this resolution, has not commented yet.
Kulmiye and UCID parties have proposed that the current National Election Commission (NEC) should continue to complete any election preparations such as voter registration for the coming parliamentary and local council elections.
They also put forward that new NEC members (seven members as before) to be selected in August this year.
The statement urged the current parliament to expedite the ratification of the necessary election bylaws.
This comes just after only a few weeks when a high-level delegation from the countries who support Somaliland elections and democratization, visited Hargeisa and pressed all sides to find a resolution for the election challenges.
The third party Waddani, the main opposition party, have not yet made a response to this resolution and the party’s chairman, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro (Cirro) is expected to return to Hargeisa, today, from Europe, where he was meeting his supporters and Somaliland diaspora around Europe.
