Last Opposition Appointee resigns from the Electoral Commission

Hassan Yusuf Du’aale, a member of the controversial National Electoral Commission in Somaliland has announced his resignation as his commission failed to win the confidence of the opposition parties.

After two years expanded on a dispute over the national elections commission, the first cracks appear in the commission itself. Hassan Yusuf Du’ale, a member of the controversial electoral body announced his resignation on Monday and called his colleagues to follow suit.

Mr. Dualle said he resigned to be part of the solution for the protracted electoral impasse in the country. He added that his conscience could not allow him to continue at his job when he does not have the confidence of all the election stakeholders.

Responding to the call of the opposition parties of election commissioners to resign, and thanking the president for his firms stand on upholding the law and insisting that there were no legal grounds for dismissing the Natioanl Elections Commission, I, Hassan Yusuf Du’aale, decided to resign from the job of the National Elections Commission.

On the other hand, Mr. Du’aale called on his colleagues at the NEC to follow his step and step down. He reiterated that his colleagues failed to win the confidence of the election stakeholders, although maintaining that it was not their fault.

I also implore the members of the National Elections Commission to make it easier for the people of Somaliland and to accept the calls for their resignation, since there is no one that has confidence in them to oversee an election.

Hassan Yusuf Dualle was nominated by the opposition party UCID and was among the incomplete Electoral Commission that took office in November last year. His resignation leaves the NEC with only Kulmiye party nominated commissioners.
