Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – Somaliland opposition parties and the government both accepted the recommendations of the Mediation Committee announced yesterday.
The opposition parties UCID and Waddani welcomed and accepted the recommendation of the committee wholeheartedly. In a joint press conference, the chairman of Waddani party, Abdirahman Irro said they jointly accepted the recommendations of the committee that took upon itself to break the deadlock.
Abdirahman Irro said they have accepted the proposal of the committee in deference to the public interest, the unity of Somaliland’s people and the advancement of the nation’s democratization process.
The two opposition parties have decided to accept the decision of the mediation committee between the opposition parties, the government of the president and his party. Considering the public interest, the unity of the nation, and the democratization process, the opposition party is taking back its grievances against the previous Electoral Commission.

Meanwhile, the government has also welcomed the proposals of the mediation committee, although little more ambiguously. The interior minister, Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, said the government fully accepts the advice of the committee and their recommendations adopted through the legal procedures.
Kulmiye party completely backs the decision of the committee. It also seconds the guidance the committee provided which says the legal procedures of the country will be adhered to while enforcing these decisions.

the mediation committee recommended the dismissal of the controversial electoral commission which was sworn-in just last month. It further called for reinstating the previous electoral commission which was not less controversial than its successor.
Waddani party had boycotted the previous electoral commission back in 2018 and insisted on its dismissal beginning a year-long political deadlock and election delays.
