Opposition parties reject term extension for the House of Representatives

Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – The opposition parties UCID and Waddani party have rejected the term extension granted to the House of Representatives. In a joint statement, UCID and Waddani party said the term extension is illegal and undermines Somaliland’s democratization process.

This came hours after the House of Elders extended the term of Somaliland’s House of Representatives by two years in a unanimous vote earlier today.

The two parties lamented that political parties and other election stakeholders were not consulted on the extension of the House of Representatives’ term. Waddani and UCID said the term extension for the House of Representatives was a usurpation of power and undertaken for political ends.

They accused President Bihi of violating the constitution and leading the country to the path of authoritarian rule.

Both parties have declared that they will not cooperate with the new electoral commission until the controversial members are suspended. They alleged that these members have not fulfilled the requirements of the electoral commission.
