Major towns in Somaliland especially the capital city Hargeisa, have been decorated with flags and emblems in preparation for the 18 May celebration.
From new Hargeisa down to the presidential villa in Hargeisa the capital city, flags in different sizes and shades have been flying to the glory of the sun as Somaliland citizens home and abroad gear up for the 18 may celebration.
Mammoth crowds of people gathering in the city have been witnessed and no single soul is left out of the celebration galore.
Cars, buses, houses, shops, restaurants and hotels are all flagging the beautiful colors of the country while some tall buildings have installed larger formats of garments wavering in red, green and white with a black star in the middle.
Some major road networks have been experiencing a gridlock with vehicles hooting in solidarity while passengers chant as a sign of build up to this special event.
The day which represents the fruits of the sacrifice of many years of struggle and warfare, is set aside by the country’s leaders to commemorate its divorce from the unsatisfied unity with Somalia.
After British Somaliland became independent in 1960, it willingly joined up with the former Italian Somaliland to form modern Somalia. However when an independence movement developed in former British Somaliland, it led to the Somalia Civil War between 1988 and 1991.
The war ceased, and Somaliland officially declared its independence on the 18th of May 1991.
