Somaliland President Muse Bihi has congratulated Rishi Sunak on his election as the UK Prime minister and the conservetive leader. Bihi expressed hope the ties between the two countries could be stronger under Rishi’s leadership.
President Muse Bihi wished him luck and more prosperity for the UK. The UK is regarded as one the closest allies Somaliland has among the western countries. However, Britain still does not consider Somaliland as a sovereign state which had withdrawn its unity with Somalia in 1991.
It’s unclear if the new Prime minister Rishi Sunak could change his foreign policy towards this horn of Africa state and establish further relations, most importantly the Somaliland case as an independent state from Somalia.
Earlier this year, UK MPs had endorsed Somaliland’s recognition and the motion was tabled in the parliament , but the British government insisted that both Somaliland and Somalia “Must decide their future.”
Debates over Somaliland’s recognition have been repeated in the UK parliament on several occasions, with municipalities in Sheffield, Cardiff and Birmingham already recognizing Somaliland as an independent state.
