Hargeisa, May 14 (Somaliland.com):- At least five persons were confirmed dead and nine others sustained various degrees of injuries after heavy rains flooded Hargeisa on Monday evening.
A large number of houses, roads and other properties are reported to be damaged. Majority of city districts were in electricity blackout nearly four hours after power companies cut off electricity for safety reasons.
Three persons perished when their car was submerged in high running water during the flash floods. The car got stuck in and filled with water near 150-Street, north of Hargeisa.
In another scene, a young lady and man were electrocuted by electrified water in Sh-Madar area. The man identified by name of Liban was trying to save a lady named Hodan Esse who was stranded into electrified water.
Somaliland President HE Muse Bihi Abdi visited the affected areas and sent his condolences to families who lost loved ones. The president indicated that it’s unfortunate to lose lives in a manner that can be prevented.
Police and Fire Brigade were in full force to help and rescue people who were affected by the three-hour downpours.
Poor urbanization, lack of water drainage system and blocking of roads by new buildings are attributed to the recurrent floods of Hargeisa every year.
