Hargeisa, Aug 27 (Somaliland.com) – At least three persons were confirmed dead and eighteen others injured after a rainstorm and squallish winds hit Hargeisa on Tuesday afternoon.
A large number of houses, roads and other properties are reported to have been damaged by the turbulence. Majority of the city districts experienced electricity blackout for several hours after power companies cut off electricity supply for safety reasons.
Electric poles, advertising billboards, and trees were uprooted while rooftops were blown away, causing severe damages to lives and properties.
The Somaliland President HE Muse Bihi Abdi visited the affected areas and sent his condolences to families who lost loved ones as a result of the storm.
The president said that it’s unfortunate to lose lives in ways that can be prevented. He attributed this catastrophe to a poorly designed electricity distribution system, unbalanced billboards and lack of drainage systems.
Health workers, police and fire brigade were in full force to render assistance and rescue people who were affected by the rainstorms.
