Somaliland security forces were, however, able repel the assailants who launched a surprise attack against the police station.
Eyewitnesses and local residents said that they heard the exchange of heavy firepower between the two sides which lasted for hours. The insurgents soon fled the scene when they could no longer sustain the attack, a number of casualties is yet to be confirmed by both sides.

The colonel by name Faisal Falalug who was not part of the Khatumo-Somaliland peace accord claimed responsibility for the attacks against Somaliland security forces.
