Mogadishu – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire today received Somaliland delegation carrying aid money to the victims of flooding in Somalia.
The delegation comprised of business people, philanthropists and religious leaders from Somaliland arrived at Mogadishu yesterday. Since then they have been meeting with officials of the federal government of Somalia, culminating in their meeting at the premier’s office.
The delegation was tasked to deliver Somaliland’s first aid to Somalia in eight years. It is a six hundred thousand dollars meant for the relief of flooding victims in Beledweyne, Hiiraan region of Central Somalia.
This the second time in a decade Somaliland has come to Somalia’s relief in the face of natural disasters.
Somaliland had set up the commission to coordinate the relief efforts for Beledweyne flooding victims last month. It is chaired by the head of Somaliland’s Chamber of Commerce, Jamal Ibrahim Aideed, and has its members include prominent business people, philanthropists, and religious leaders.
Heavy rains in late October have caused widespread flooding in Somalia, displacing close to 270,000 people. The worst affected region was Hiiraan, in central Somalia, where Beledweyne district was flooded. People there have left their homes and have gone to seek shelter in higher areas.
