June 18: Resumption of dialogue reached
The resumption of formal dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland was the main point of success achieved after three days of talks hosted by Djibouti.
“We closed last night 3 days of negotiations between the delegations of Somaliland and Somalia with success for a resumption of the dialogue,” the Djiboutian Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf tweeted on Thursday.
“Djibouti has been chosen as a mediator and will fulfill this role to help create a climate of trust between the two parties. Dialogue will continue in the coming weeks on issues of common interest,” he added.
For a process that has so far been under a regional arrangement including Ethiopia, represented by PM Abiy Ahmed; Djibouti also noted that the United States and European Union “will be the facilitators of this dialogue process.” Any other partners may join the process if they wish, the Minister added.
PM Abiy returned home after the first round of talks between the leaders. June 15: Technical teams continue meetings
Following the first day of talks between Somalia and Somaliland, technical teams led by the respective leaders have entered talks as of today, according to reports.
This was followed by direct talks between technical teams with Djibouti minister of foreign affairs Mahmoud Ali Youssouf as facilitator, a VOA journalist, Harun Maruf; tweeted citing a source.
Whiles the host, Djibouti president Omar Guelleh is sitting through the talks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia – who was part of the opening ceremony over the weekend, has since returned home.
